Projects

So far Ive been doing short silly projects, but want to get into some real stories, with a team. I've got some ideas (if your interested in any drop me an email or leave a comment):

New Sherlock Holmes stories
Ive written a sci-fi/mystery/adventure that I'd like to animate its set in 2090: exploring technology, work, politics, etc
Kids adventure stories (like the TinTin's etc) Ive written a few of these too.
Classic scenes from literature (Dostoevski, Gogol)
Animation summary of Fredrich Nietzsche's: Zarathustra

People Im looking for:

Primarily blender experts: The main skill you need is 2d and 3d animation with Blender...
Artists who are expert with Gimp/Photoshop for characters and backgrounds...
Audio experts (audacity): soundfx and music
Voice actors
Sponsors/backers interested in financially backing the film.
(Im happy to do these projects without the funding, but obviously it would be quicker, easier and better to be able to do it more or less full time without a distracting day job)

My ideal way to distribute it would be inexpensively on: dvd and also online. I think it will sell itself if we have great animation with great story.

As a warm up for the upcoming olympics Im doing a little series called 3D HippO-lympics (olympics for Hippos). I designed a little hippo and ambulance (which features heavily in the acciedent prone world of hippos) I will probably upload the characters so others can make their own versions and post them here as well.

Psychology of 2d vs 3d animation

I love both 2d and 3d animation... and also combining them. Even if you do exclusively 3d or 2d stuff its still useful to experiment and learn from the other technique.
Recently Ive been working with 2d. With 2d the mind seems to just quickly say "ok this obviously has little resemblance to 3d reality" and accepts the 2d "world" quickly, without expecting realistic physics, materials, colours, depth of field etc.Somewhat ironically with 3d, it can actually be harder to fool the mind into "accepting the animation as a world". Because
3d animation is closer to our reality than 2d, the mind easily picks up anything that doesnt "feel right". The mind expects so much more from 3d than it does with 2d, and the animation has to be much better quality for the mind to accept it as a "world"...Also with 2D, if you use clean lines, simple shapes, no materials (ie use simple shading/gradients only) both the animator and audience can focus on the story and ideas rather than being hypnotized by all the visual elements...

Ive started this blog for the following reasons:

-To post my animation short films for public viewing (they are free to view on here, but pls dont copy them to youtube etc)
-Provide information on how I made these animations
-As a resource for animators looking for soundfx and tools
-Keep track of my projects and plan future ones
-Find and collaborate with other animators on some of my bigger projects
-I have lots of ideas for animations but limited time to make them... so to share my ideas with other animators
-To find possible employers who need an animator/artist
